Here's a GREAT drummer, I think he's unheard of mostly. I don't think he's even listed at drummerworld, but he really should be. Great chops and great groove. I've only heard his playing with Al Jarreau, and so here's samples I've taken of some of his monstrous playing from 'Look to the rainbow' CD, 1977. Yes Rudy you're right he is an unsung hero. I just love all of the tracks on this project. Some really musical and tasteful drumming. Hey the vocals aint too bad eitherLOL! PT.

Ok cymbal experts, I need your kind help again. Just when I bought the K custom dry light ride( which I love), there's still a more ultimate sound I'm looking for. On the 'take5' clip, at 0:58 seconds, he starts to play a really breathy, trashy/crashy ride cymbal with a gorgeous bell. You should hear it coming from the left speaker. I suspect it's one of those really old sought after K's. Can anyone figure out what cymbal it is, and/or what new cymbals would give me the same sound? Maybe constantinoples? Thanks!

edit: There's 2 rides he plays, one darker than the other.
I'm guessing Mr.Randy Drumencyclopedia Walker might hopefully know [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Sorry to be a pain, but I've tried finding out what ride cymbal this is. I wrote to modern drummer, and the best they came up with was agreeing with me that it's probably an old K, being that the album was recorded in 1977 and that there was a limited range of cymbals around then compared to now. If it is an old K, then I can see what the fuss was all about and why they're so sought after. I even asked MD about me contacting joe correro, but they couldn't help me. Here are revised clips where you can hear it,(left speaker). Can anyone tell what size it might be, what model it might be if it's an old k, or just a generic K jazz ride? I so want this cymbal!! My K jazz ride and custom dry light are great, but not quite like this one, not as washy, not as explosive. This is the holy grail of rides to my ears. Or where could I get hold of some old K's? UK people, neber dude, Louie, dazzler, you know of any?

Rudy, I ain?t no cymbal guru but when I listened to the 1st sample it just struck me how that cymbal sounded EXACTLY like the old ride that was on my first used kit I got. Same bell sound, same trashy/crashy riding. It was a 22? Zilco ride. Zilco was the canadian Zildjian subsidiary in the 70?s that became Sabian.

I remember it because I HATED so much that ? jazz ? sound for all the time I had it. I was young and into heavy rock. I sold it for peanuts (another stOOOpid thing I did) and bought a shinny Paiste heavy ride to sound like Nicko. I wish I could turn back time cause it?s now a sound I?d also like very much to have.

That's extremely interesting, and I have indeed heard of zilco. But by the name, I guess I dismissed it, because it sounded like tosco, which was a very cheap cymbal I had many years ago.

Shame you haven't got it anymore man, sounds like it would have been worth a fortune now. But still, I have some great news! I discovered a website called cymbal-holic. Man, these people are all into old K's, istanbuls and bosphorous. Anyway, they directed me to another site called cymbalsonly, which deals exclusively with istanbul agops and bosphorous. That is THE place to get classic sounding cymbals. Check out my post,(I'm DRuM), and also, check out the soundbites at cymbalonly. I think I've found heaven! I selected 4 soundbites. Do you think any of these are the same as what I'm looking for? Personally, I think they are very close. I'll be ordering a cymbal very soon I think. Who needs constatinoples with these gorgeous pieces of metal. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Oh and, they tell me old K's are not a good bet, because they go for around 3 x the price I just paid for my custom dry light ride, so that would be about $1200! [img]eek.gif[/img] Thank god for instanbuls then.

Could I get some opinions please. The owner of cymbalsonly recommended me this cymbal as being the one I'm looking for. I really like it. There's one more though that I like. Which do you think represents the right sound of joe correro's? Or which do you think sounds better? Basically, I'm not sure which one to go for, because they're both great. The first one is darker, more spread, but the bell is a little too raw. The second one seems closer in pitch and has more of a note on the bell, closer to joe's sound.
Both are 20" Agop jazz rides, and I'm about to order one of these. If I go for the second, I'm losing some of that dark spread of the first one. Or do you think there's enough spread on the second? [img]confused.gif[/img]

Yes, the 2nd one is closer to Joe's ride.
Now I think the final test will be: Is the cymbal you chose still cuts through your band with enough definition considering his dark tone and large spread?

To be honest tombo, it probably won't work with my band at all, but I'll give it a try.

I'm glad you posted this topic because I love the sound of traditional/classic jazz cymbals. Now, I know of another place to find some beautiful sounding cymbals in the future.
